In order to become a qualified scuba diving instructor it is necessary to combine some classroom learning with diving experience. PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, runs a large selection of courses for professionals as well as for those who simply want to learn to dive for their own enjoyment.

The first stage in becoming a professional scuba diving instructor is usually to take a Divemaster level course. It is necessary to be able to dive yourself before you can begin training to teach others. In order to join a PADI Divemaster course, it is necessary to have passed three lesser qualifications to become a qualified Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver. After qualifying as a Divemaster and logging at least 100 dives, it is then possible to find work as a PADI Instructor, although with only limited responsibilities.

In order to become a fully qualified PADI accredited scuba diving instructor it is then necessary to take wither the PADI Instructor Development Course (or PADI IDC ) or to take both the Assistant Instructor Course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor Course. At the end of this training, candidates for full instructor status will need to take and pass the instructor exams.

PADI scuba driving instructors can also train in specialized fields. There are more than 40 different PADI specialist course to choose from, according to your interests and career goals. PADI specialty courses include such options as digital underwater photography and coral reef conservation. As a qualified PADI instructor, it will also be possible to take other continuing education courses in order to keep your skills honed and to advance in your chosen profession.

The PADI system allows everyone to train at their own pace, and ensures that there are many different choices that can be made along the way. Courses can be taken in different locations around the world, and different pathways can be followed in order to reach the same ultimate goal of becoming a fully qualified PADI diving instructor and get a job teaching other people how to dive. Qualified PADI accredited diving instructors can apply for jobs at PADI dive centers and diving resorts, and they will find that their qualification is held in the highest regard by all employers looking for diving instructors.

This means that you can use your course as an opportunity to explore some of the dive sites that you have always hoped to see. It is even possible to combine a diving instructor course with a vacation. Many of the courses that have to be taken on the way to becoming a fully qualified scuba diving instructor take under a week to complete. They can therefore be undertaken during vacation time from your current job and you may even have time to stay on at the school location for a while to enjoy a proper vacation. This can be useful if you need to log some additional dives before moving on to the next stage of your career progression, as it is not just on your qualifications, but on the amount of time you have spent in the water that you will be judged as a diving instructor and on which your application to take a course will be accepted on rejected.

If there is a diving school near where you live, you will be able to choose to stay at home while studying on your course. This can be a much more cost effective option, as long as you live within a commutable distance from the school. Even if you need to look for a residential course, or to find some cheap accommodation near the school, it can be cheaper to stay in your home country or to choose a location to which you can fly for a more reasonable rate.

It can also be a good idea to consider your aspirations for the future when you are choosing your training location. It is sensible to choose a site that resembles the area in which you hope to work when you are qualified, as you can then gain some experience diving in a similar environment and begin to get to know some of the main dive sites and undersea wildlife.

There are more than 5000 PADI accredited dive training facilities around the world, so there are a huge range of dive shops, schools and resorts to choose from when you are selecting a location to train to be a scuba diving instructor. Your options will be narrowed down somewhat by the exact course you want to take, as not all of the PADI courses will be offered at every site. One of the most popular specialist courses is the Enriched Air Instructor course. After taking this course, you will be able to teach learner divers how to use enriched air nitrox blends which contain 22 to 40 percent oxygen on no compression dives.

Another course that may be useful professionally is the Dry Suit Diver Instructor course. During this course, you will learn about the safe use and maintenance of a dry suit. This will be particularly beneficial if you intend to work in an environment in which dry suits are often used.
